WordPress to Next.js: What Businesses Should Know
Compare content workflows, integrations and operating responsibilities before selecting a new framework.

Choose around the publishing workflow
WordPress combines content editing, themes and plugins in a familiar system. Next.js is an application framework, not a direct replacement for every WordPress capability. A migration must decide where editors will manage content, how previews work and who maintains the application.
Separate the content from the behavior
Inventory pages, posts, authors, media, forms, search, logins and checkout flows. Some plugin features can be recreated with standard components or services; others need a custom integration. Exporting posts does not reproduce a page builder's layout or a plugin's business logic.
Keeping WordPress as a headless CMS is another option. That can preserve editing workflows, but retains a WordPress installation and its update responsibilities. A complete move requires choosing a replacement content model and editorial experience.
Plan for delivery and operations
Rendering strategy, caching, images and script budgets affect visitor experience. A modern framework creates opportunities for optimization, not an automatic performance gain. Authentication, dependencies, hosting configuration and external APIs still require ongoing attention.
Prove the important journeys
Build a representative page and test editing, preview, publishing, form delivery and redirects before committing the entire site. Agree acceptance criteria and responsibilities. A business should know what it gains, what changes and what remains to be maintained.

Put this into practice
Decide what replaces WordPress—not just its theme
- Which people publish, approve and preview content?
- Which plugins provide business behavior rather than visual styling?
- Will the new content system remove PHP, or keep WordPress as a headless backend?
- How will redirects, search, forms and editorial previews work after launch?
A headless WordPress site can still depend on PHP. If reducing PHP exposure is the goal, specify which backend components are being replaced as well as the frontend. Choose the editorial experience and maintenance responsibilities before selecting the final architecture.
