How to Export Your WordPress Website Files

A content export is not a complete backup. Preserve the database, assets and configuration securely.

Know which export you need

WordPress's content export can help move posts, pages and related editorial information. It is not a complete copy of the running website. Themes, plugins, uploads, database tables and hosting configuration may require separate backup steps.

Work only with authorized access

Use your hosting provider's backup tools or an approved backup process. Before downloading anything, verify that you have permission and a secure destination with enough storage. A database or archive may contain customer information, password hashes and API credentials.

Capture dependencies and special data

Document forms, commerce settings, custom tables and plugin-specific records. Store configuration separately from public assets, and never place database dumps or backup archives in a public web directory. Restrict access and follow an appropriate retention policy.

Test restoration, not just download completion

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Have a qualified developer test a recovery copy in an isolated environment, disable live outbound actions where appropriate and verify key content and functionality.

For migration, agree which information is actually needed and how it will be transferred and deleted. A careful inventory can prevent unnecessary handling of personal data while preserving the content your new site requires.

Put this into practice

Check that your handover is actually complete

  • Separate the content export from the media library, database and site files.
  • List plugin settings and third-party records that a standard export may not include.
  • Check that original images, downloadable files and important custom fields can be retrieved.
  • Agree a secure transfer method and retain a recoverable source copy until sign-off.

An export file is an input to a migration, not a replacement website. Confirm what it contains before shutting down the source hosting. Protected customer information and credentials need separate handling; do not attach them to a public inquiry.
