Craft CMS vs. Modern React-Based Websites
A CMS and a frontend library solve different problems. The right combination depends on your team.

Compare the layers fairly
Craft CMS provides structured content management and editorial tools. React provides a way to build user interfaces. A React-based website still needs a content source, publishing process and deployment strategy. These are not interchangeable products.
Protect the content model
Craft installations often contain custom sections, fields, relationships and asset transforms. Document that model before moving content. A flat export can lose relationships that editors rely on. Review localization, previews and user permissions as well.
Decide what should change
Some organizations want a new frontend while retaining Craft as a content backend. Others want to replace the full stack. Both require clear API boundaries and an understanding of licensing, hosting and ongoing support. Neither makes security maintenance disappear.
Test the editorial experience
Give editors a representative task: create a page, add an image, preview it and publish a revision. Then test the visitor experience across devices. Include rollback and content recovery in the discussion.
A good modernization decision preserves the capabilities your business values and changes the parts that create friction. Start with those requirements rather than assuming one technology is universally better.

Put this into practice
Compare your content workflow, not just frameworks
- Inventory Craft entry types, fields, relationships and localization requirements.
- List editorial permissions, draft previews and approval workflows.
- Decide whether Craft remains a backend or its content model is moved to another system.
- Identify search, asset transforms and integrations currently supplied by plugins.
React defines a frontend approach; it does not supply an entire publishing system. Your replacement needs an explicit content model and editing workflow. Retaining Craft as a backend also retains its PHP dependency, which matters if leaving PHP is the reason for the project.
